What is IB MYP?

Franklin Middle School

International Baccalaureate is an educational program whose mission is to nurture our students in developing the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Students in the 21st century are faced with the challenge of learning about an interconnected world where knowledge is constantly developing. The International Baccalaureate®(IB) Middle Years Programme prepares students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.

What does this mean for Franklin?

  • Franklin Middle School is an authorized IB Middle Years Programme School - the first public IB MYP school in our area!

What does the IB MYP provide students?

The IB MYP provides students unique, rigorous instruction wrapped in global awareness and authentic learning opportunities. Students successful in the completion of the MYP are well prepared for high school, advanced course work and have a solid foundation for post-secondary education.

A few illustrations of the IB MYP experience:

  • Students learn about the countries, culture and language of Spanish and French speaking people, deepening their understanding, appreciation and connected to the global society. The Spanish or French courses meet every other day, throughout the school year in 6th grade. Spanish and French courses meet daily in grades 7 & 8. Successful completion of the courses in grades 7 & 8 earn 1.0 high school credit each year, a total of 2.0 credits before students leave middle school. Grade Point Average (GPA) and transcripts will reflect the grades earned.
  • Students earn .5 high school required Health credit with the successful completion of 8th grade Health.
  • All students develop and showcase their artistic talents in Performing and Visual Arts as they participate in concerts and other community/public events. Our student artists' work is displayed throughout the community.
  • Computer and technology experiences are integrated into content courses. Therefore, computer skills are learned and used continuously with connected to course content. Units are presented by two teachers, both IB trained, a content teacher and a technology teacher. Computer literacy is an important component of all MYP courses.
